2nd Draft Design – Microfilm Accessories
I was first introduced to 2nd Draft Design’s handbags while perusing my favorite boutique, Soho in N.E. Portland. I fell in love with the dramatic elongated shape and shiny patent leather sheen. Upon closer inspection I realized this bag had tiny cartoon characters as print, magnifeco!
Julie Yu’s modern yet retro microfilm handbags and jewelry are quite the conversation starter! 2nd draft designs was born in 2007 when Julie discovered about 80 reels of 1960s-1970s NY Times Microfilm at a local store that sells reused materials for arts and crafts. “I purchased all of them with no definite plan. I knew the film had life beyond their dusty boxes” says Julie.
It took the next three years trying new ideas before Julie finally came up with a product she loves. Julie now seeks out microfilm and 16mm color film with unique characteristics (Old TV shows, cartoons, microfilm from Life Magazine and the Saturday Evening Post). There’s miles of film out there that is never going see a projector again and not likely to breakdown in a landfill, what’s going to happen to all of it? We hope it arrives in Julie’s hands where she can turn it into your next treasured accessory!
