Everyone’s talking about: Prabal Gurung
As NYFW comes to a close, it seems like everyone is talking about Prabal Gurung(Michelle Obama and Sarah Jessica Parker are fans). N.Y. designer Gurung was born in Singapore and raised in Kathmandu, Nepal. In 2010 he was the recipient of the Ecco Domani Fashion Fund Award, he was chosen for CFDA Fashion Incubator for 2010-2012 and in 2011 he received the CFDA Swarovski Womenswear Award. Part of his CFDA prize money, as well as his profits from his knitwear pieces, made in Nepal, go to support his charity: Shikshya Foundation. His foundation provides education to 23 girls whose mothers are incarcerated (some for falling victim to human trafficking), with a goal to increase that number to 300 over the next 10-15 years. Gurung said, in a recent American Vogue interview (August), “I happen to be a designer who makes clothes, and through clothes – as little as it may sounds in terms of the bigger picture of humanity – my interest has always been about empowerment.” – Magnifeco!
