Mielie was born in 2002 around Adri Schutz’s dining room table. Her mission was to design and produce innovative, export-quality hand-crafted products using reclaimed materials – with the aim of creating employment and restoring dignity and financial independence to South Africans. The employment created at Mielie, which has grown to a family of fifty, is sustainable and allows people to work from home. The fabric of the Mielie range is reclaimed, and the finishes (cotton thread, needles, genuine leather handles etc) are locally produced. This small shoulder bag is hand-woven with reclaimed t-shirt fabric. Big enough for your wallet, keys, phone and lipstick, it has a leather handle, a zip closure and a cotton lining with an internal pocket. Prices start at £46.90.

They also have  large bags. Size: Length 36cm Height 23cm. Either similar to the small (with leather handles) or like this – unlined with cane handles. Prices start at £66.90. At Mielie, a product is only considered successful if it creates a job, is mindful of the environment – and is competitively and beautifully designed. #magnifeco!
