Missibaba is a Cape Town based accessory design label established by Chloe Townsend in 2005 after studying at the London College of Fashion. Her ongoing love affair with leather – its smell, malleability, depth of colour and texture – have been the underlying constant element in her design: be it pleated, printed, hand-painted, punched-out, cut-out or stitched. This Possum bag comes in a nude leather with hand painted zig zag cutouts in purple patent, grey and yellow. The top of the bag and the strap are in soft silver. Stitch detail in bright pink. Worn over the shoulder as a satchel, it sits comfortably on your hip, or you can hide the strap and wear it is a clutch. Size: height 28cm/ width 37cm. $450 USD.

Missibaba collaborates with craftswomen at the iKaya Trust centre, in Kayamandi. Started through a skills development and job creation project, they are responsible for the beautiful embroidery used in Missibaba bespoke pieces and the sweetie & caterpillar necklaces made from leather off-cuts [ensuring no waste]. Like this Beaded leather necklace- multi-coloured punched leather discs, strung with glass or wooden beads and waxed cotton. $50 USD.

Chloe Townsend has also joined forces with childhood friend Cara Rosa to create Twine Fabrics. Conceived over dinner in early 2008 when both realized there were no contemporary organic fabrics available locally (in South Africa), Twine Fabrics are created with a perfect blend of  55% hemp and 45% certified organic cotton. To purchase these, you need to visit their studio at The Palms (please make an appointment on 021 461 1083) or email cara {at} twinefabric.com.
